Bowties are diagrams that visualise a hazardous scenario and create a clear differentiation between preventative and mitigative risk management measures.  Safety Solutions has extensive expertise in running Bowtie studies in all industrial sectors, including dairy, food production, oil and gas, power generation and pulp and paper. We have expertise in the following types of Bowtie studies:

a) Pure qualitative Bowties – where causes, control and escalations are visualised, but no risk reduction quantification is applied to the structure. This has the benefit of communicating risk, but not quantifying risk

b) Semi-qualitative Bowties – where risk reduction factors are used for controls based on their effectiveness to determine the final consequence risk level.

c) Quantitative Bowties – where a methodical LOPA approach is applied to the bowtie development and the frequency of the final outcome is determined.

The Bowtie has 3 main parts:

  • The centre of the hazard and top event
  • The left-hand side represents the causes and preventative controls
  • The right-hand side represents the mitigation controls and the outcomes.

Safety Solutions uses the Velocity EHS Operational Risk Platform to develop Bowties (a cloud-based risk assurance platform).
